HTTTG
The IUPESM has set up a Health
Technology and Training Task Group (HTTTG) which is intended to assist countries
in defining their health technology needs, and identifying and rectifying health
system constraints for adequate management and utilization of health technology,
particularly through training, capacity building and the development and
application of appropriate technology. Specific tasks for the Group are to help
identify needs in health technologies and training for each cooperating country,
to make recommendations for actions to satisfy these needs, as far as
appropriate and possible, to support the countries in the necessary actions, and
to set up a Medical Equipment Donations Assessment and Advisory Service
to match
health technology donations with appropriate recipients.

IOMP President’s
Report for Medical Physics World (MPW)
Last year at the
world congress in Seoul, Korea, Barry Allen proposed to the IOMP that action was needed to
stimulate and support the development of appropriate technology for improved
health care in developing countries. Joachim Nagel, then president of the IFMBE, was supportive of a joint initiative, and noted that IFMBE already had
arrangements with the WHO to this effect. The concept was adopted by the IUPESM,
and the Health Technology and Training Task group was formed, with Barry Allen as
chair, and Joachim Nagel as co-chair. Since then some 50 international experts from
around the world have agreed to join the Task Group.

HTTTG started activities in Vietnam
On two different
levels HTTTG started its activities in Vietnam. Cooperating with medical
physicists and local hospitals, Barry Allen started an initiative for improved
Health Care in the Mekong Delta. In parallel, HTTTG established cooperation with
the Vietnamese Association of Biomedical Science and Engineering to improve the
Vietnamese Health Technology (HT) infrastructure, especially in rural areas, and
to coordinate HT support from a number of international organizations engaging
in Vietnam. More...
