BIOMEDEA
The objective of BIOMEDEA is to develop and establish consensus on criteria, guidelines and protocols for the harmonization and accreditation of high quality Medical and Biological Engineering and Science programs, and for the training, certification and continuing education of professionals working in the health care systems with the goal to insure mobility in education and employment as well as the highest standards for patient safety. BIOMEDEA is a mainly European project in which more than 60 universities and other academic institutions participate. The initiative, with the University of Stuttgart as the lead institution, is supported by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering. It closely cooperates with the World Health Organization. More...BIOMEDEA WORKSHOPS AND SYMPOSIUM ON PATIENT SAFETYTo discuss and work out the criteria, guidelines and protocols for biomedical engineering higher education, accreditation of BME programs, training and certification of biomedical/clinical engineers, three symposia/workshops took place. The meetings with participation from more than 60 European and overseas universities and societies took place in Eindhoven (December 2004), Warsaw (April 2005), and Stuttgart (September 2005), featuring a series of workshops and an international symposium on patient safety, an important issue of quality assurance in biomedical/clinical engineering. OUTCOMES There has been general acceptance of the BIOMEDEA guidelines for BME programs, their accreditation and the training as well as continuing education of clinical engineers even beyond Europe. New BME and revised Bachelor and Master programs are adhering to the BIOMEDEA guidelines. The resulting documents are:
